Chopan Trust hosted a Taleem Baithak focused on improving Christian education in Pakistan. Learn about the event, our commitment to quality education, and teacher development. At Chopan Trust, we believe education transforms lives. We are a Christian education charity in Pakistan. A key part of our work is fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge. This is why Chopan Trust was thrilled to host a productive Taleem Baithak (educational gathering) recently in Lahore. Fostering Collaboration and Growth This Taleem Baithak focused on “What and How to teach.” Principals from low-cost Christian schools in Pakistan attended. We welcomed Saquib Khan from The Citizen Foundation. His expertise and insights were invaluable. The discussions covered effective teaching methods. Participants discussed how to ensure positive learning. They also addressed the unique challenges Christian schools in Pakistan face. This event directly addresses the critical need to improve teaching in Christian schools in Pakistan. Assessment for Learning Workshop at Chopan Trust Training Center On 17th January 2025, the Chopan Trust Training Center hosted a highly engaging and insightful one-day workshop on “Assessment for Learning.” The esteemed Ma’am Riffat, Principal of the A-Level Section at Kingston College facilitated the session. Twenty-five dedicated teachers from four different schools in Lahore and Kasur attended the workshop, making it a vibrant and collaborative learning experience. A Focus on Innovative, Activity-Based Learning The workshop’s central theme revolved around innovative, activity-based approaches to “Assessment for Learning”—a key pedagogical strategy to enhance teaching and learning outcomes. Ma’am Riffat brought her vast experience and expertise to the session, ensuring that the participants remained engaged and actively involved throughout the day. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and group tasks, participants explored the core concepts of assessment for learning. The session’s interactive nature allowed teachers to absorb the theoretical aspects and practice and refine their skills in real time. Key Highlights of the Workshop Ma’am Riffat meticulously structured the workshop into different segments, each addressing a crucial aspect of assessment for learning. These segments included: Understanding the Purpose of Assessment for Learning Emphasizing how assessments can be used as tools for continuous improvement rather than just evaluation. Encouraging teachers to view assessments as a two-way feedback mechanism. Designing Assessments for Teachers Guiding teachers on how to assess their own teaching practices to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Sharing strategies for setting measurable, realistic teaching goals. Developing Effective Student Assessments Demonstrating how to create assessments that cater to diverse learning styles and needs. Highlighting the importance of formative assessments in driving student engagement and learning. Implementing Assessment Tools Introducing innovative tools and techniques to make assessments more impactful and meaningful. Discussing methods to integrate assessment seamlessly into daily classroom activities. A Collaborative Learning Environment The diverse group of attendees, representing schools from both Lahore and Kasur, brought a wealth of perspectives and experiences to the table. This diversity enriched the discussions and allowed for the exchange of best practices across different educational settings. Participants appreciated the opportunity to network and learn from one another, further enhancing the overall experience. Feedback from Participants The feedback from the teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted how the workshop provided them with practical strategies that they could immediately implement in their classrooms. They also appreciated Ma’am Riffat’s clear and structured approach, which made complex concepts easy to understand and apply. A Step Toward Excellence in Education This workshop marks another milestone in Chopan Trust’s ongoing commitment to empowering educators and improving the quality of education in the region. By equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge needed for effective assessment practices, the Trust continues to pave the way for a brighter future for students and educators alike. As the day concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and a toolkit of innovative strategies to enhance their teaching practices. Inspired by the sight of children working in brick kilns in Village Hangarwal, Anser felt compelled to bring some Christmas joy into their lives. He envisioned a celebration where children from schools and brick kilns could come together, showcase their talents through a vibrant program, and enjoy a festive lunch. The dream was to also provide each child with a warm sweater to combat the harsh winter weather. And so, Chopan Trust embarked on a mission to spread warmth and cheer. Our Christmas celebration brought together over 1000 children and 100+ teachers, filling the auditorium with laughter and festive music. The children’s performances were a delightful showcase of their talents, creating lasting memories for all. 0-0x0-0-0# Our outreach extended beyond the celebration. We traveled to brick kilns in Manga Mandi and Kasur, distributing warm sweaters to hundreds of children and providing them with nutritious lunches. 0-0x0-0-0# We also visited two orphanages: Sara Grace Home and New Hope for Life Shelter Home, where we provided warm sweaters and brought the spirit of Christmas to the children residing there. The meal program started in Sada e Pakistan school, Faisalabad, has been served among 161 children and 14 staff members which were 175 persons total. The comments from teachers :Teachers were very happy to serve the children first and then to eat by themselves. The were willing and sharing that they would like be the part of this activity again. They also said that they would like to include the Indome noodles in their regular meal because it’ s not only healthy for children but also for adults as well. Children were happy to eat the Indome noodles with egg and they sharing that they feeling more energetic than regular meal. So we would love to eat again.

Sometimes it is right to be angry about poverty, especially among God’s children No one should have to live in a “house” like this. We received this appeal from a friend of Chopan:“Sir, we need your help for this lady because she has no good shelter. She is living in flex shelter.When rain comes everything wet by rain… Please prayer must for this lady, she is so much helpless… Kamran, a painter on daily wages, his wife Kiran and their two children, lived in this condition for 17 Years. The Chopan Trustfound donors to help construct a small room for them. It didn’t cost much but it made a home for the winter for this small family. Praise God, construction of the house is in progress. 

Moved by the photo of these children of brick kiln workers in Village Hangarwal, Anser determined togive them a Happy Christmas. He wrote:“We can gather all the children from schools and brick kilns, give opportunities for the children to perform a variety program, celebrating Christmas — and lunch at the end. If possible we will give a gift of a warm school sweater to use during the winter weather (cost: about £3 / $4 each). Strategic Planning Retreat (Oct 25th to Nov 1st 2024) @ Lahore, Pakistan Rajan and Shantini from Malaysia    Rajan and Shantini have been long-term friends and supportersof Anser and Kashi. They were in Pakistan in late October to attend aChopan Trust planning retreat. This is Rajan’s report We had an opportunity to visit the four schools under the 3E’s program. We were encouraged to see the enthusiastic way the principals,teachers and children embraced the new ways of teaching and learning. This was evident from the level of engagement that we witnessed. The Seeds of Promise Initiative: A donor from Singaporeblessed the children with school bags and brand-new textbooks. This was very meaningful to children who were used to sharing textbooks and had no proper school bags. Chopan Trust is now looking at a few other areas both inthe short and long term. This includes:A Scholarship fund for deserving students Literacy centres for parents and siblings of the children(not attending school) School development fund (school infrastructure /teaching resources)  Educational resource centre Sourcing for a 4 wheel drive as the schools are in areas with poor accessibility Buying a building which can become a permanent site for Chopan Trust. It is unfortunate that Chopan Trust has needed to move 3 times within the last year due to issues with various landlords. We realize that this is only the beginning and the journey forward will be challenging. Last week finally made it feel real- our teacher training journey has started! It was actually literally a journey as we traveled for 6 hours to another city to give a one-day teacher training to teachers from schools of the surrounding villages, some of which were at a 3-hour distance from the training venue. They willingly endured such long journeys in this heat because they had previously heard about us and did not want to miss this chance. What favour of God! We are truly thankful and humbled, determined to work even harder for our community. Conducting this training made us realise, once again, of the great need of our Christian children. These teachers, despite having years of teaching experience fail to successfully fulfil their students’ needs. In today’s digital world, where even villages have smartphones and Wi-Fi, these teachers did not know simple nursery rhymes! To these teachers their teaching starts with a textbook and ends with a textbook. This can also be said of their responsibilities. They believe that their professional goal is to have their students pass their exams even if to achieve this, they have to hold their students’ hands and give space for rote memorization for all their school life. On this topic, one principal shared, that to achieve good results for their classes, some teachers even do the students’ exams themselves. In this race to produce high scorers, our schools end up sacrificing the students’ holistic development, producing for society dependent adults. If you are a parent, you are well aware, there comes a time in your child’s life when you have to let go of their hand and teach them to walk independently. By failing to produce independent and holistically developed individuals, we give to society handicapped students who are not capable of achieving much. In doing this, we destroy the future of our youth, making them incapable of exploring and reaching their own potential. Therefore, for this training, the main topic, taught by our Academic Director, Kashi Javed, was “Effective Teachers”. In her session, she taught how teachers can go from seeing their teaching as just a profession to pursuing it like a passion. She discussed qualities that an effective teacher should possess in order to ensure the success of their students holistically. Many qualities, that are absent in many classrooms of Pakistani community-based schools were discussed. The second session revolved around effective teaching methods. Teachers were taught how they can take their students beyond rote-memorization ensuring effective and engaging learning. In this session emphasis was placed on sensory and experiential learning. Teachers were encouraged to conduct in-class discussions, not a common practice, and allow students to actively engage with their syllabus. This training was more than just an event; it was a wake-up call. A teacher’s responsibility extends beyond teaching from a textbook to igniting curiosity, nurturing independence and shaping young minds to think beyond the four walls of a classroom. Every small step, every interaction, every effort to improve teaching methods is a brick laid in the foundation of a better tomorrow for our students. As educators, we have the power to break the chains of rote learning and nurture a generation of confident, creative, and critical thinkers.
