Chopan dreaming bigger dreams

Strategic Planning Retreat (Oct 25th to Nov 1st 2024) @ Lahore, Pakistan Rajan and Shantini from Malaysia    Rajan and Shantini have been long-term friends and supportersof Anser and Kashi. They were in Pakistan in late October to attend aChopan Trust planning retreat. This is Rajan’s report We had an opportunity to visit the four schools under the 3E’s program. We were encouraged to see the enthusiastic way the principals, teachers and children embraced the new ways of teaching and learning. This was evident from the level of engagement that we witnessed. The Seeds of Promise Initiative: A donor from Singaporeblessed the children with school bags and brand-new textbooks. This was very meaningful to children who were used to sharing textbooks and had no proper school bags. Chopan Trust is now looking at a few other areas both inthe short and long term. This includes:A Scholarship fund for deserving students Literacy centres for parents and siblings of the children(not attending school) School development fund (school infrastructure /teaching resources)  Educational resource centre Sourcing for a 4 wheel drive as the schools are in areas with poor accessibility Buying a building which can become a permanent site for Chopan Trust. It is unfortunate that Chopan Trust has needed to move 3 times within the last year due to issues with various landlords. We realize that this is only the beginning and the journey forward will be challenging. Even so we are thankful and give glory to God in Christ Jesus for His provision and pray that He will continue to direct and provide in accordance with His will.Thank you, Rajan & Shanthini

From Profession to Passion – A Training Session

Last week finally made it feel real- our teacher training journey has started! It was actually literally a journey as we traveled for 6 hours to another city to give a one-day teacher training to teachers from schools of the surrounding villages, some of which were at a 3-hour distance from the training venue. They willingly endured such long journeys in this heat because they had previously heard about us and did not want to miss this chance. What favour of God! We are truly thankful and humbled, determined to work even harder for our community. Conducting this training made us realise, once again, of the great need of our Christian children. These teachers, despite having years of teaching experience fail to successfully fulfil their students’ needs. In today’s digital world, where even villages have smartphones and Wi-Fi, these teachers did not know simple nursery rhymes! To these teachers their teaching starts with a textbook and ends with a textbook. This can also be said of their responsibilities. They believe that their professional goal is to have their students pass their exams even if to achieve this, they have to hold their students’ hands and give space for rote memorization for all their school life. On this topic, one principal shared, that to achieve good results for their classes, some teachers even do the students’ exams themselves. In this race to produce high scorers, our schools end up sacrificing the students’ holistic development, producing for society dependent adults. If you are a parent, you are well aware, there comes a time in your child’s life when you have to let go of their hand and teach them to walk independently. By failing to produce independent and holistically developed individuals, we give to society handicapped students who are not capable of achieving much. In doing this, we destroy the future of our youth, making them incapable of exploring and reaching their own potential. Therefore, for this training, the main topic, taught by our Academic Director, Kashi Javed, was “Effective Teachers”. In her session, she taught how teachers can go from seeing their teaching as just a profession to pursuing it like a passion. She discussed qualities that an effective teacher should possess in order to ensure the success of their students holistically. Many qualities, that are absent in many classrooms of Pakistani community-based schools were discussed. The second session revolved around effective teaching methods. Teachers were taught how they can take their students beyond rote-memorization ensuring effective and engaging learning. In this session emphasis was placed on sensory and experiential learning. Teachers were encouraged to conduct in-class discussions, not a common practice, and allow students to actively engage with their syllabus. This training was more than just an event; it was a wake-up call. A teacher’s responsibility extends beyond teaching from a textbook to igniting curiosity, nurturing independence and shaping young minds to think beyond the four walls of a classroom. Every small step, every interaction, every effort to improve teaching methods is a brick laid in the foundation of a better tomorrow for our students. As educators, we have the power to break the chains of rote learning and nurture a generation of confident, creative, and critical thinkers. We are on a journey to transform education with the goal of transforming lives, and our journey has only just begun. More Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/fPcRHSrwgGR2g3FX6 Dua Javed

Rediscovering a Hidden Legacy

When many people think of the origins of Christianity in Pakistan, their minds often turn to the 19th century, picturing British missionaries spreading the gospel under the shadow of colonial rule. Others might trace the roots back even further, to the journey of the Apostle Thomas, who, according to tradition, brought Christianity to India around 52 AD. But what if we told you that the history of Christianity in Pakistan extends far beyond these well-known chapters? Christianity’s presence in this ancient land predates the establishment of the British Empire and reaches back to the dawn of the faith itself. This hidden legacy is a testament to the resilience, faith, and enduring spirit of the Christian community in Pakistan—one that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. Today, many Pakistani Christians live as if they are foreigners in their own country, often feeling like unwelcomed guests in a land where their history is deeply rooted. They are descendants of a community that has weathered centuries of change, challenge, and adversity, yet continues to stand firm in its faith. Our mission is to change the narrative, to tell a story that has been overlooked for far too long. That’s why we are thrilled to distribute “The Amazing Story of Pakistan’s Christians” in Urdu nationwide. This incredible book takes readers on a captivating journey through over 2,000 years of Christian history in Pakistan. It’s more than just a book; it’s a revelation of a hidden chapter of our nation’s history. Dr. Samuel Naaman, a respected professor at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, describes the book as “a treasure for the Church and mission historians and an inspiration for young Pakistani Christians to be proud of their own heritage.” This powerful statement reflects the heart of our mission—to inspire young Pakistani Christians to embrace their identity and heritage with pride, and to recognize that their faith is not a foreign import but an integral part of Pakistan’s historical and cultural tapestry. As readers turn the pages of this book, they will encounter stories of faith that have withstood the test of time, from the ancient Christian communities of the Gandhara civilization to the brave believers who kept the flame of faith burning through centuries of social and political upheaval. They will discover the remarkable ways in which Christianity has intertwined with Pakistan’s broader history, enriching its cultural landscape and contributing to its diverse legacy. The story of Christianity in Pakistan is a story of resilience, hope, and a shared heritage that belongs to all Pakistanis, regardless of their faith. “The Amazing Story of Pakistan’s Christians” is more than a book—it’s a call to reclaim a legacy and to stand proud of the incredible journey of faith that has brought us to where we are today. Let’s celebrate this history, honor those who came before us, and inspire the next generation to carry the light forward. This is our story, our heritage, and it deserves to be told. Dua Javed

Effective Teaching Strategies

Effective Teaching Strategies: Part of 3Es Discipleship Training 3-Day Teacher Training – 25 –  27 July 2024 Background Pakistan faces a significant challenge with a high number of out-of-school children, inadequate teaching facilities, and teachers often lacking the necessary degrees and skills. It is heartbreaking to see children coming to school without the ability to read, write, or develop essential life skills. This not only hinders their academic growth but also their overall development and prospects. Our deep concern for these children and a strong desire to make a difference in their lives led us to initiate the “3Es Teacher Training Initiative.” Specifically targeting Christian community-based schools for Christian children, we aim to transform teaching practices and ensure that every child receives a quality education. This initiative represents our commitment to uplifting these communities through effective teacher training and continuous support over the next three years. Devotion: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ik5GqaeXr4p5rECA9 From 25 to 27 July 2024, we conducted a three-day intensive teacher training program titled “Effective Teaching Strategies,” as part of our 3Es Teacher Training Initiative. This program focused on the Preoperational stage of cognitive development, characteristics of effective teachers, and subject mastery. Our training went beyond traditional methods, actively involving all participants in a dynamic and interactive learning experience.  Day 1: Preoperational Stage and Teaching Methodologies for Pre-Year 1 The first day centered around the Preoperational stage, based on Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. Teachers learned how children in this stage (ages 2-7) think and learn. We also focused on teaching methodologies for English, Urdu, and Math books for Pre-Year 1, providing detailed guidance on effectively delivering lessons to young learners. Teaching: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uuEX5tVF6r2pyXHe7 Day 2: Characteristics of Effective Teachers and Teaching Methodologies for Pre-Year 2 On the second day, we delved into what makes an effective teacher, exploring traits such as empathy, patience, and adaptability through practical activities. We also covered teaching methodologies for English, Urdu, and Math books for Pre-Year 2. Participants engaged in hands-on practice, developing their skills in delivering engaging and effective lessons. Day 3: Subject Mastery and Teaching Methodologies for Pre-Year 3 The final day focused on subject mastery, ensuring teachers are well-versed in their subjects and can convey complex concepts simply and clearly. We also covered teaching methodologies for English, Urdu, and Math books for Pre-Year 3. Teachers practiced their teaching techniques in a simulated classroom environment, refining their approach to meet the needs of their students. https://photos.app.goo.gl/882VhjMnsZkFhbuF7  Training Methodology Our training program was unique and effective, far from a traditional lecture-based approach. Participants were actively involved in listening, learning, group work, preparing assignments, and practicing teaching in a simulated classroom environment. The training was filled with games, warm-up activities, and presentations, creating an engaging and joyful learning environment. This hands-on approach allowed participants to discover their inner potential, hidden skills, and passion for teaching, leading to significant personal and professional growth. Story Telling Skills: https://photos.app.goo.gl/R4Po81sQzQ6ucCRNA Material Provided: The following materials in a file were provided to each school: Material Distribution: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SyfmLdPvBXGzmWHR7 Participant Feedback The feedback from principals and teachers was overwhelmingly positive. One principal expressed gratitude, noting, “The facilitators’ caliber and standard are high, and such training usually costs a lot of money. We are thankful to Chopan Trust for providing it free of cost and for the excellent tea and lunch. I am excited to implement these skills in my school.” Another teacher commented, “I never knew that for effective teaching, I can even use the low-cost materials available in the classroom and school bags.” One teacher excitedly shared with the group, “After the first day of training, I couldn’t stop talking to my mother and family at home. I am learning knowledge and skills in this training that I never knew. I don’t know how many more days I will keep talking about this training and the facilitators.” Certificate Distribution: https://photos.app.goo.gl/AUyz2n7rLPUtU5wG8 Celebration A distinctive feature of our training sessions is the celebratory cake-cutting ceremony that recognizes and applauds the achievements of every participant. https://photos.app.goo.gl/MgJoE8Yth9B2e9CQ9  Conclusion The 3Es Teacher Training Initiative has proven to be an effective and transformative program. Focusing on cognitive development, effective teaching characteristics, and practical teaching practices has empowered teachers to provide high-quality education to their students. However, this three-day training is just the beginning of a new journey. We are committed to continuous support, with monthly visits to these schools to ensure the progress and growth of teachers and principals. We will be available from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday, for troubleshooting and assistance. Additionally, we will conduct quarterly training sessions at each school individually, focusing on their specific needs and helping them grow professionally. Our commitment to sustained improvement in teaching standards will ultimately benefit the children of Pakistan and contribute to a brighter future for the nation.
