Plastic for breakfast: initiation and dream of development
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and seen plastic as an option on the menu? It would be rather strange, wouldn’t it? Surprisingly one day my wife and I discovered that almost every day plastic was being served to us at our breakfast table.
While eating an egg for breakfast, I felt a strange chewy feeling in my mouth. I asked my wife if she had overcooked the eggs by mistake. When I was met with a negative response, I took the chewy content out of my mouth only to discover that it was not the egg but rather it was a piece of plastic!
After realizing that this was a common occurrence with eggs bought from the market my wife and I decided that we were going to buy organic eggs from now onwards. However, that plan was met with an obstacle very soon as we got to know the prices. Organic eggs tend to be a bit expensive.
Not wanting to have any more plastic for breakfast yet being stopped by the pricy organic eggs, I came up with a solution. I was going to raise country chickens on my own! This way we would get organic eggs without having to pay for them. This was an idea that both my wife and I decided to move forward with despite never having raised chickens before. I started with 2 cocks and 7 hens, which led to 28 chicks being added to the flock. Seeing this growth led us to the idea of establishing a farm of our own, linking it with the community development projects that we had on our heart.
Through the support of anonymous donors and friends we started the construction of our farm in 2022 and have been running it for one year now. The primary goal of this project is for our family to become self-sustainable so that we can lead other families and communities to both self-sustainability and growth. Although this is the primary purpose, our long-term dream for the farm is to expand it into a self-sufficient family business which will also produce surplus to fund other Chopan projects.
